winter in summit county

If you only come for our world famous snow, you’re only getting half the story.

While our winters are renowned, summer in the Rocky Mountains is quite possibly one of the most unheralded experiences. Imagine the string of 14,000-foot peaks exchanging their heavy winter coats for brilliant green, accented by endless fields of wildflowers. And if you thought the Lake Dillon Lodge was at the center of everything all winter, we’re even more conveniently located for all the things there are to do during the summer.

For starters, nearly every surrounding resort town hosts a festival on the weekends. If you’d prefer something a bit further off the beaten track, try the mountain biking right out our back door, or the paved bike path that winds its way past the lodge.  And if you’d rather tread a little lighter, Summit County is a great place for hiking.

One thing you can do that you can’t do at most other mountain resorts is enjoy the water. Lake Dillon, which is less than a mile from the lodge, is one of Colorado’s great spots for sailing and fishing, and the many rivers that feed it are great for whitewater rafting. You can even take a powerboat tour of the lake from one of the many nearby marinas.

And speaking of tours, you can experience the backcountry by jeep or on horseback, or, if you’d prefer an entirely different perspective, try a hot air balloon ride. You can even jump on a chairlift with your mountain bike and enjoy nothing but the view and the easy ride. And for a bit of history, try a scenic train ride.
